Synopsis

A young child is stranded in Tonga when his plane crashes and his father is eaten by a fish. He trains in a dojo till he becomes the Tongan Ninja. The Tongan Ninja is dispatched to the island nation of New Zealand in order to help a brother of his master with his floundering Chinese restaurant. But the mysterious Mister Big stands in the eatery’s way as he sends numerous villains such as Knife Man, Gun Man, and finally Action Fighter who may know a lot about the hero.

Synopsis

For her first feature, writer/director Gillian Ashurst wanted a big wide road movie; big skies; big long roads. Cruising the Canterbury landscapes are small-town dreamers Alice (Heavenly Creature Melanie Lynskey) and Johnny (Dean O’Gorman). But the duo’s adventures go awry after encountering a charming American cowboy. Reviews were generally upbeat: praising the talented cast, plus Ashurst’s ability to mix moods and genres. Snakeskin won five awards at the 2001 NZ Film and TV Awards, including best film and cinematography.

The debut feature from Dunedin talent Robert Sarkies starts as a comic tribute to Otago student days, then turns into a psychological thriller. Outside of the two Once Were Warriors movies, Scarfies was the most successful Kiwi release of the nineties on its home turf. It went on to scoop the best film, director and screenplay awards at the 2000 NZ Film and TV Awards.
