Taika on writing Disney’s Moana

Charles Madison from Film Divider had a chat with Taika about What We Do in the Shadows, out in UK cinemas now. He also used this opportunity to ask the director about Moana, Disney’s new story about Polynesian Princess, which was revealed recently that Taika wrote an original script to.

Film Divider: I guess I’m not supposed to know that you worked on Disney’s Moana, but I do feel that I have to ask you about it.

Taika Waititi: I was a writer on that.

Are you done with that now, have you stepped away?

Someone else is writing it now and I go in and check up on how they’re doing every now and then, tell them “You’re doing great guys. This is going to be a cool cartoon.”

Did you have to do a lot of research into Polynesian history and mythology?

Nah, I just made it up.

So is the mythology in the film all your own invention?

Actually, they have a big story room involved. But I wrote the first few drafts and now and then I go and read what they have. It’s out in 2016.

The film’s US release is set for November 23rd, 2016
